April meeting of the West Arnhem Regional Council

09 May 2023

The Ordinary Meeting of the West Arnhem Regional Council took place on 12 April 2023 where Councillors considered a variety of important topics, asking the tough questions and using their collective force to passionately advocate for our region.
It began with the most important item of the day, the declaration of office of our newly elected Councillor Mr Gabby Gumurdul. Cr Gumurdul is a strong advocate for the region and a passionate representative for the people of Gunbalanya and surrounding areas.
Council will be requesting the Hon Minister Manison MLA and Minister for Northern Australia & Trade to visit Gunbalanya to discuss the economic Growth Plan and the prioritisation of relevant projects, hopefully this can coincide with an OCM so we can get the meeting out to the community.
They also requested a response via LGANT to the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics the Hon Eva Lawler requesting the prioritisation of Arnhem Link Road in the NT Infrastructure Plan and Pipeline 2022-2030 focusing on the sections from:
1. Gunbalanya Intersection to Cahill’s Crossing
2. Ramingining turn off to Maningrida
Council has accepted an invitation from East Arnhem Regional Council (EARC) to attend their upcoming June Ordinary Council Meeting in person, represented by Mayor Ryan, Cr Blyth, Cr Phillips, Cr Marrawal, Cr Dann, Cr Guwiyul and Paul Hockings CEO. What an exciting opportunity to share knowledge and see how it is done by other Regional Councils.
Council received a Quarter 3 update on the service delivery plan of our West Arnhem Regional Plan 2022-2023, and in-depth update on Council’s finance report as well as the monthly updates from our Organisational Growth team and Operations team monthly update. Council also discussed the future of AFL in our region, supported by Council to develop the important fundamentals of scratch matches and team and community spirit.
Another huge decision made by Council, that WARC will engage the services of ‘Keep Australia Beautiful’ which allows every community not only the support of the organisation to ensure we pick up our rubbish and recycling game but also puts each community in the running for the tidy towns ward.
All Council meeting agendas and minutes are available on West Arnhem Regional Council’s website and members of the public are welcome to attend meetings. The next Ordinary Council Meeting will be on Wednesday, 10 May 2023.
