Kurrung Sports Carnival returns in 2022

12 August 2022

Sportspeople from across West Arnhem Land will unite at the 2022 Kurrung Sports Carnival on 16 and 17 September 2022.
Following the 10-year anniversary of the event in 2019 and then two years of travel-related restrictions due to covid, West Arnhem Regional Council is proud to once again provide an opportunity for sportspeople from remote islands and mainland communities to come together at Kurrung.
With the Aboriginal communities of West Arnhem having a proud tradition of sporting excellence, uniting teams at this level is key to contributing to strong communities through fair play, team spirit and celebrating community sentiment.
This year’s event will be an inter-regional carnival with AFL and men’s and women’s basketball teams from Jabiru, Gunbalanya, Maningrida, Warruwi and Minjilang converging to Jabiru for two huge days of sport.
At the 10-year anniversary event in 2019, the Gunbalanya team took out the men’s AFL grand final match to the delight of players, their families and supporters who could not hide their excitement.
Meanwhile, in the hotly contested basketball competitions, the two Warruwi teams dominated the courts to take out both the men’s and women’s tournaments, demonstrating there is plenty of talent hailing from the small island communities.
West Arnhem Regional Council wishes to thank all supporters and sponsors of this year’s carnival including supported by the Australian Sports Commission. If any local businesses or organisations can assist to get local teams to Kurrung, please contact your local Council Services Manager.
Team registrations are now open for the event and forms are available at your local Council office.
If you would like to find out more about the event, please have a chat to your local Youth, Sport and Recreation Officer in your community.
