Minjilang culvert works offer training opportunities

15 January 2018

West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) recently assisted in Roads to Recovery culvert works in Minjilang to upgrade the existing drainage structure between the airport and townships.
After a survey of the area, it was identified that a series of new culverts be installed along Airport Road, to protect the roadway from future damage, and with the assistance of WARC the construction phase commenced to replace five of the worst culvert sections identified.
The scope of work entailed replacing the existing plastic and metal realm culverts that were in poor condition with new concrete box culverts. The road pavement was also reinstated and compacted to ensure strength and durability.
WARC was directly involved using local workforce, plant and equipment from the start to finish of the project so this was a unique opportunity to further develop skills. The workforce also prepared the site daily, ensuring traffic management was in place including a new road detour for access while the project was underway. Other duties included operating the plant and machinery and also having a hands-on approach in constructing all aspects of the job.
During the construction phase, there were many issues the contractors and our local workforce had to contend with, however the project went so well, WARC managed to carry out the extra two culvert sections which were in poor condition.
Simple maintenance and inspections will ensure the ability of the drainage system will work effectively and improve road conditions for years to come.
