The Njanjma Rangers held their Healthy Country Planning workshop in Gunbalanya and surrounds recently. Significant outcomes were achieved throughout the five days of planning, none more so than the further building of a strong partnership with the Gunbalanya School. Njanjma Rangers Program Manager Trent Wilkinson said the future was looking bright. "We are building a whole of landscape management pathway that will produce economic, employment and social benefits to Bininj of the region for another 65 years."Read more

THE ancient landscapes of Kakadu filled the screens of breakfast TV viewers around Australia on Monday 25 May as The TODAY Show broadcast live from Anbangbang Billabong. Dozens of Jabiru locals made the trek in the pre-dawn light to be part of the show with hosts Karl Stefanovic, Richard Wilkins and Lisa Wilkinson. Children’s Ground Bininj Gunborrk dancers put on an awesome display of local culture and dance, and Kakadu Park Ranger Fred Hunter cooked up a breakfast of bush tucker, which Jenny Hunter, Catherine Ralph and Andy Ralph presented to the hosts live on air.Read more

TIMOTHY Nadjowh has been fêted as a hero in his home community of Gunbalanya in a special ceremony acknowledging his life’s work. In a historical day of celebration, Mr Nadjowh was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to the Indigenous communities of West Arnhem and to the visual arts. Mr Nadjowh was treated like Indigenous royalty in the event at the Gunbalanya school on Friday 15 May, by VIPs and schoolchildren alike.Read more

AWARD-winning filmmaker Rachel Perkins is calling on organisations and individuals across Australia to support a newly launched foundation in its quest to preserve Indigenous cultural heritage. Ms Perkins says the loss of songs, language and culture is a story that resonates in Indigenous communities across Australia. Speaking at the launch of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Studies (AIATSIS) Foundation on Thursday 14 May, she said there was an urgent need to identify, gather, safe-keep and share Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage.Read more

THE Jabiru community has done it again, putting on the third annual Kakadu Triathlon – an event that just keeps getting better and better! Speaking at the event on Saturday 16 May, Kakadu Triathlon Race Director Brett Verity from the Darwin Triathlon club had nothing but praise for the community event. “This is my favourite event, and I'm into pretty much anything – if there's a race to the letterbox I'll be in it,” Verity said.Read more
