Activities engage youth in communities

25 October 2018

With the school holidays ending, the Warruwi Sport and Recreational Hall is back to normal opening hours and plenty of activities have been running in the hall, for example golden child, which is a very popular game amongst the smaller children within community.
Art and craft has also been a major feature that has been taking place in the afternoons, and the children in the community are working to finish off the murals on the outside of the walls with the designs being a community initiative project with the help of ‘proper creative’.
Regular physical activities have also been taking place in the night as the weather is starting to get noticeably warmer, and the team has been providing the youth with lots of cold water and fruits to keep the energy levels up in the lead up to summer.
These activities consist of skipping, hula-hoops, indoor cricket and basketball.
The sport and recreation program has also been involved in helping promote school attendance by actively taking part in the morning bike ride.
The sports and recreational program also plays a role in reminding the children about school attendance and the benefits about going to school at the start and end of the program each day at the hall.
Regular programs have also been running in Minjilang since the school holidays have finished.
Popular activities which have taken place this  fortnight include dodgeball, kick ball, basketball, soccer and some food preparations in the kitchen.
As the weather is starting to get warm and moving into summer, the sport and recreation team is looking to introduce new activities and utilising the hall’s inside space more.
They would like to run more home economic activities with the help of Rise to go with art and craft in the future.
They have also been proactive with the school, making sure their presence is felt there and sharing ideas for up and coming events in the community.
