Amazing new murals at Warruwi Recreation Hall

28 June 2018

The Warruwi Recreation Hall now proudly features incredible wall to wall murals, painted both inside and out, which were dreamed up by the young people of Warruwi and created in partnership with urban street artists.
West Arnhem Regional Council supported this exciting project through funding, and as a result of a huge team effort, the well-utilised hall now reflects the stories, imaginations and vibrancy of the Warruwi community.
Warruwi gladly welcomed Dave from Proper Creative in Darwin and Kate, an independent artist, to carry out the murals and also work with the youth who assisted in creating, designing and painting.
As a result, the recreation hall now has a new-edge look and also gives the young people a sense of ownership as they came up with their own designs by doing rough drafts and sketches with the guidance of both professional artists.
Stencils spray cans, brushes, rollers, and markers were used through out the artists’ duration in community.
From day one to five, the body of work displayed by the community was absolutely terrific and by the end of the week, a huge number of community members had visited the hall to see the amazing art work on display and even stop to take photos.
This also included internal and external stakeholders within the community as well as other West Arnhem Regional Council staff.
To celebrate the work, there was also a re-launch of the building and barbecue for all community members.
Dave from Proper Creative said, “It’s awesome to see the community lead this project and come up with such creativity.”
