Celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day

07 September 2020

The Jabiru Library and West Arnhem Regional Council’s Youth, Sport and Recreation teams celebrated Indigenous Literacy Day with a reading of 'Collecting Colour' (by Dunstan, K) on Thursday 3 September.
The group gathered under the shady tree outside the library to celebrate Indigenous literacy in our community with FAFT, the Jabiru Childcare and the Mums and Bubs group joining them for the day.
Jabiru Library is proud of the inclusive and diverse children’s book collection at the library and continues to source Indigenous content books.
The Indigenous Literacy Foundation donates books to our library each year. They are very fortunate for this donation and are grateful to have so many wonderful books at our library.
“Can you imagine not being able to read a newspaper, a road sign or directions on a bottle of medication? Sadly, this is a reality faced by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders living in remote communities today,” Karen Williams OAM, Executive Director of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
The ILF is supported by the Australian Publishers Association, the Australian Booksellers Association, the Australian Society of Authors, and the Children’s Book Council of Australia With a team of ambassadors, volunteers and seven full-time staff who run the core program with no government support or major corporate funding, they give away tens of thousands of new books annually, run literacy projects and organise major fundraising events, including Indigenous Literacy Day.
