WEST Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) workers are getting down to the business of installing fences around houses in the Croker Island community of Minjilang.

The $1.18 million Housing Management Program (HMP) fencing project is keeping dogs in, horses out, and people in jobs.

Speaking at the Local Authority Meeting at Minjilang on Wednesday 1 October, Council Services Manager Justin Dean said the fencing project was well underway, with local crew Lachlan Nabegeyo and Charles Yirrawala giving Tony Rohl a hand with the work.

“Any community members interested in casual fencing can sign up for the project with Jobfind,” Mr Dean said.

WARC Asset Manager Clem Beard welcomed Tony Rohl to the concreter/fencer position with the Infrastructure Team last month.

“Tony began in Gunbalanya for the first two weeks, assisting with the footpath construction, and then relocated to Minjilang to commence the HMP fencing program for community homes,” Mr Beard said.

“He will also be assisting with the construction of oval fencing for Warruwi sports ground, scheduled in the next couple of months.”

Mr Beard said with the help of Lachlan and Charles, the fencing project was off to a great start in Minjilang.

“Hopefully a few locals will be interested to come on board with the project now,” he said.

“The fences help residents control dogs, and also give them a chance to get a garden going,” he said. “They keep horses out, especially this time of year when they are walking in looking for water.”

Mr Dean said WARC was also looking to do some work on the local footy oval.

“WARC will be applying for funding to investigate the cost of upgrading the football oval including irrigation and fencing," he said.
