Island communities enjoy diverse holiday program

16 October 2018

The past few weeks have been very busy for the Minjilang Youth, Sport and Recreation team.
During the school holidays, many youth were involved in the program which was very diverse to appeal to all community members.
The proactive activities which were held included dodgeball, futsal and basketball during the holidays.
The program also focused on running art and craft activities, as well as home economic lessons in the kitchen with young people. There has also been regular discos and community barbecues which were very popular.
These activities have been running each evening and the youth have shown great participation in the programs during these two weeks.
Another major event which recently took place was the Tidy Towns celebrations.
And, it was fantastic to see community members show up in numbers to take part in this event.

There were many things that happened during the day and night including face painting with the young kids and a live band which consisted of local musicians from the community.
The locals also traditionally welcomed visitors to country and prepared a cultural dish freshly from the land.
There was also a huge barbecue for all community members, plus sport and recreation opened the hall and prepared a variety of ball games for the youth that day.
Following the celebration, a movie night was put on for the entire community and many people showed up to watch the big screen outdoors.
Activities also took place the next day as some youth started heading back to boarding school and the children were also well aware that school is back the following Monday in community.
Meanwhile, Warruwi’s Youth, Sport and Recreation program got off to a flying start this month with the school holidays running from October 1-14.
Many youth started arriving back into community and a monthly program was already planned for this period.  Many proactive activities took place during this period such as cricket, skipping, hula hoops and soccer for the very young, as well as basketball and a few discos.
There was also regular art and craft sessions as well as painting and community barbecues held in the community. Also, Warruwi took part in the Tidy Towns competition which was a huge success on October 11. Different agencies in the community were involved and worked with the Council, and Yagbani also presented a huge banner of art designed by the community. A community barbecue also took place and later on in the evening the sport and recreation team organised a movie night outdoors for all community members.
