Jabiru children learn importance of hygiene

03 April 2020

A member of the Department of Education, Nancy, visited the Jabiru Childcare Centre recently to talk to children about the importance of hygiene to prevent the spread of germs in day-to-day life.
The children were provided lotion to apply to their hands before placing them inside the mouth of ‘Jerry the Germ’, which is a figurine that features an ultra violet light.
Using this, the children could see all their germs under the light, and then washed their hands with advice from Nancy.
Nancy also spoke about the importance of washing their hands with soap after using the toilet, before eating, and that people can catch germs when dogs sleep in the bed as well.
Nancy also gave great advice about sneezing and that there are ways to prevent the spread of germs –this can be done by sneezing into our elbow. The children practised and received a sticker once they had mastered it.
The children also looked at posters with Nancy about ways to prevent Jerry from ‘catching a ride’.
As a result of this great visit, the children will receive certificates for all healthy hand washers.
