A TEAM from the Jabiru Fire Station has again won the NT Firefighters Games Sunday 11 May at Fred’s Pass reserve in Darwin.

Jabiru has been the dominant team in the last four competitions, managing to beat some close competition. The team this year consisted of experienced members Justin Gould, Macca Morris and Tamykah Anderson alongside three new members in Tony Koch, Adam Thompson and Mike Martin.

Mike said Jabiru’s previous Station Officer and experienced competition member Steve “Ando” Anderson also came to help out with training.

“The events rely heavily on team work, planning and fitness,” he said. “The competition consisted of seven different events, with Jabiru taking out four. Of those four, we broke two of the record times.”

The competition, which has been running in the NT since 2003, is a series of timed trials in which singles or teams of four, five or six work to operate hydrants or pumps to access water and deliver it through single or connected lengths of fire hose to strike simulated targets.

This year there were seven teams, consisting of volunteer and auxiliary members from Virginia, Bees Creek, Humpty Doo, Howard Springs, Bathurst Island, Koolpinyah and Jabiru.

Mike said there was no doubt that that the interval training guidance from station Captain Justin Gould and boxing routines from Vice Captain Macca Morris had dramatically improved members’ fitness this year.

“This was a huge contribution to the competition win,” he said.

He described the Jabiru Fire Station as a community and family-oriented station with members from a wide variety of backgrounds.

“We currently have 17 members, consisting of both auxiliaries and volunteers and two full-time Fire Fighters,” he said. “Aside from providing an emergency response capability to Jabiru and Kakadu, we are regularly involved in community events and hold regular social occasions for members. We hold weekly training sessions on Road accident rescue, bushfire fighting, Structural Fire Fighting, Hazardous Materials incidents (HAZMAT), and many other topics plus we run intense Physical Training sessions three nights a week for members.

“These sessions are not compulsory but members have found them very rewarding, with six members entering in teams for the Kakadu Triathlon and Captain Gould recently completing the 10km Blood, Sweat and Fears event in Darwin.”

Station training nights are held from 6pm on Monday nights. If members of the public have an interest in coming along to see what the NT Fire and Rescue service can offer them, they are more than welcome. The station is located on Leichhardt Street, Jabiru, opposite the Croc Hotel.
