Kurrung Sports Carnival returns to West Arnhem in 2022

29 September 2022

The 2022 Kurrung Sports Carnival returned with a bang this year as it united five remote communities for one huge weekend of sport in Kakadu National Park.
West Arnhem Regional Council is the proud host of the regional sports carnival which brings men’s and women’s sports teams from Jabiru, Minjilang, Maningrida, Warruwi and Gunbalanya together.
Through Kurrung, Council is able to continue to contribute to building stronger communities in the West Arnhem region.
There were many highlights and new additions to the 2022 sports carnival including the first ever women’s AFL showcase match which featured women’s teams from Jabiru and Maningrida.
The talented Maningrida Dance Troupe also put on an exciting performance before the basketball grand finals with the whole audience cheering them on.
Carnival participants were also fortunate to meet Darwin Salties players Nathan, Kylie and Erin who came out to make a special appearance and provide valuable basketball skills and knowledge.
The carnival also featured the first ever ‘Spirit of Kurrung’ cup, supported by the No More campaign, which was awarded to the community which displayed the values of the carnival including; sportsmanship, respect, inclusion and fair play.
The proud community which received this award was Gunbalanya.
In the overall carnival results, there was a lot of close competition which demonstrates how much talent there is in the region.
West Arnhem Regional Council wishes to thank everyone involved in the event including participants, Council staff and the volunteers. Thank you also to the sponsors:
