Maningrida fishing enterprise wins at resource management awards

21 November 2018

Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation is celebrating after taking out the Farmers & Fisheries Sustainability Award at the Northern Territory Natural Resource Management (TNRM) Awards in Darwin recently.
The annual award ceremony recognises the remarkable work undertaken by the Territory’s champions of nature, conservation and farming for the future. The diversity of work and commitment of Territorians in the NRM space is clearly demonstrated through the strong nominations received by the independent panel of judges, and what becomes clear through the winners list cross the ten categories is that a collaborative cross cultural approach to NRM is integral to successful and meaningful project outcomes.
The award recognises sustainable practices in agriculture, and Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation was chosen as the winner for its successful Aboriginal Coastal Fishing enterprise in Maningrida, run under the NT Government’s Aboriginal Coastal Licence Regulations and fishing mentoring program.

The fishing crew are proud to provide the Maningrida community and families with locally caught seafood, while providing an additional income to people living in Maningrida and on homelands. The fishing crew catch fish by hand held nets daily. They also started to fillet fish in our processing facility.
Minister for Primary Industry and Resources, Ken Vowles said, "The Territory Labor Government has supported the Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation’s fishing enterprise in a number of ways, through training and by installing a fish processing plant at Maningrida. This project has resulted in real jobs on country, with fish sold to the local community and even into Darwin.”
The awards were presented by category sponsors, including the Honourable Lauren Moss MLA, Minister for Tourism and Culture, whose Parks, Wildlife and Heritage Division, were sponsors of both the Indigenous Natural Resource Management and the Ranger of the year Awards.
