Maningrida Pool mural larger than life

25 October 2019

Proper Creative team David Collins and Kaff-eine visited Maningrida recently to collaborate with the youth for an imaginative mural project which took place at the Maningrida Pool.
Facilitated through West Arnhem Regional Council, the weeklong project involved young people drawing inspiration from the surrounding land and sea animals and illustrating them.
These drawings were then scaled to size with artist Kaff-eine adding her interpretations and themes and as a result, the creative artwork was designed and brought to life.
The mural itself is a huge piece of art which wraps around the front walls of the facility, with the artists also painting some humorous Maningrida animal illustrations inside the first aid room.
West Arnhem Regional Council’s Maningrida Pool Team Leader Loki Nicolson said he was extremely thankful to the artists involved in the project who made it a success.
“We were so lucky to have these guys who went above and beyond for the project. They worked so well with the kids in terms of making it fun and encouraging them to get involved,” he said.
Loki also consulted with the Traditional Owners about the name for the pool ‘Manayingkarirra’, which means ‘the place where the dreaming changed shape’.
This is spelt in local language Njébbana and has been painted at the facility in neat Hollywood-style writing by David.
With the mural now complete, the facility has never looked so vibrant, and most importantly, the artwork reflects the Maningrida community itself.
With many community members frequenting the pool, everyone will get to see and enjoy the murals on a regular basis.
“It is amazingly bright and colourful and has been catching lots of attention,” Loki said.
Also incorporated into the mural is a small tribute to Traditional Owner T.D who was an integral part of getting the pool.
