Maningrida says thank you to Aboriginal Health Worker

22 July 2020

On behalf of all West Arnhem communities, West Arnhem Regional Council wish to recognise and thank Charlie Gunabarra OAM for his service in healthcare in the Maningrida region.
Long serving Senior Aboriginal Health Worker and health practitioner, Charlie has been with Top End Health Service for over 44 years, prior to transitioning to Mala’la Health Service on July 1.
To show their appreciation, the Maningrida community held a special celebration recently for Charlie.
During this time of service, he has been caring for the community with kindness and honesty and his exceptional contributions have been recognised.
In 2007, Charlie received an Order of Australia Award on Australia Day - for service to the Maningrida community through the development and provision of culturally sensitive health services, particularly for men's health.
Charlie was also awarded a special Chief Minister’s Public Sector Medal in 2018 for his incredible contribution to health in the Maningrida community.
Charlie has a unique ability to communicate and blend the multicultural facets of life in Maningrida, which he does with confidence, tact and a charming sense of humour.
He works across the spectrum of primary health care, and despite great demands on his time and energy, continues to serve his Maningrida team and community above expectation.
As Chair of the Malabam Health Board at the time, Charlie also worked tirelessly towards transitioning to community control. He was instrumental in planning the PHC building renovations, ensuring culturally acceptable client waiting areas.
Charlie regularly represents his community and profession at forums throughout Australia and is a strong advocate for healthcare delivery in outstations. Congratulations, Charlie.

As part of the Northern Territory Government’s commitment to excellence in the Public Sector, the Chief Minister’s Public Sector Medal is a prestigious medal designed to recognise an individual’s outstanding and commendable public service.
On behalf of the region, we wish to congratulate Charlie’s achievements and thank him for his tireless efforts.
