MEDIA RELEASE - Gunbalanya Ward Councillor resigns from Council

Councillor Gabby Gumurdul of the Gunbalanya Ward has formally resigned from his position as a member of the West Arnhem Regional Council.

Cr Gumurdul notified Mayor Matthew Ryan of his decision in writing on Friday, 25 November 2022 with the resignation effective immediately, in accordance with Section 53 of the Local Government Act 2019 (Act).

Cr Gumurdul was elected on the West Arnhem Regional Council on 22 September 2021 and has been a passionate representative for the Gunbalanya Ward.

Mayor Ryan said Cr Gumurdul has been a “strong advocate for the region” and thanked him for his contributions to Council and valuable service as a member of the Risk Management and Audit Committee. Fellow Councillors echoed Mayor Ryan’s words, and thanked Cr Gumurdul on behalf of the entire Council.

West Arnhem Regional Council resolved on Wednesday, 14 December 2022 to fill the casual vacancy for the Gunbalanya Ward with the appointment of the NT Electoral Commissioner as returning officer. Due to the Electoral Commission’s workload it is anticipated that the By-election will take place during February and March 2023. Further information will be provided in the near future.
