Minjilang community celebrates NAIDOC Week

02 August 2019

The Minjilang community celebrated NAIDOC Week recently which also formed part of the school holiday program.
NAIDOC Week recognises, shares and celebrates Aboriginal culture and this year’s theme was theme was Voice. Treaty. Truth which acknowledged that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people want an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia.
The Minjilang Youth, Sport and Recreation team put on an array of activities during the week with one of the highlights being hand painting for the young people.
This art and craft activity was also organised by RISE and the result turned out to be the aboriginal flag (pictured above) painted by the children. This great artwork is now proudly on display in the hall.
Another activity incorporated into NAIDOC Week was a fishing day, much to the delight on the young people.
A number of trevally and snapper were caught and brought to the hall where the youth prepared them over the coal and shared with their peers.
This activity was also part of the home economics program and incorporated traditional cooking into it.
The activities continued with the Youth, Sport and Recreation team working with the local ranger program to share dreamtime stories and the importance of wildlife and its role within the ecosystem.  There was also a big game of football, which was organised for the men in community, and basketball was organised for the women.
