The wait for phone service is over for Minjilang, which received 4G coverage Telstra Mobile communication service on Thursday, June 15.
In order to receive coverage, Minjilang’s mobile phone base station at the existing Telstra telecommunications facility had to be upgraded.
West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) welcomes the introduction of the mobile service to the remote community as this greatly improves the safety of community members and WARC staff travelling around the island and living in or visiting outstations, and is vital if there is an emergency.
West Arnhem Regional Council Service Manager – Minjilang Candice Siedler-Twine said the community is happy with this service.
“It adds to everyone’s safety should they be stranded anywhere on the island. It is reported that the signal also reaches Wiligi Outstation so the surrounding Coburg Peninsula also benefits from this service,” Candice said.
This upgrade and others like it have been made possible by the support the Federal Government, State and Local Governments under the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Programme.
The mobile service will also assist Council with a more efficient and effective delivery of Council’s daily core services and will increase the communication between the workforce and the main office.
