New Night Patrol vehicles support community safety initiatives

20 November 2020

West Arnhem Regional Council has worked with NIAA to purchase two new Night Patrol vehicles for the island communities of Minjilang and Warruwi.
With these new vehicles, which are seven seater Toyota Fortuners, Council is working to strengthen Night Patrol’s role as a community safety initiative that also participates in prevention and early intervention engagement.
The vehicles, which have arrived to both communities, feature incredible artwork which make them unique and standout to local residents.
In March, at the peak of the first wave of Covid-19, the Night Patrol teams from both Minjilang and Warruwi worked with Larrakia artist Shaun Lee to design vehicle wraps for the two cars.
The artwork on the wraps is very specific to each community, right down to each graphic. The artwork on the Warruwi vehicle, taking cultural aspects into consideration, features a story behind it and even features an image of the actual island.
The wrap concepts were done in a time when West Arnhem, like all remote locations in the NT, were under Biosecurity lock-downs. This meant all meetings involved in the design of the vehicle wraps were done via video conference. While this was an incredible challenge for all parties, the finalised designs on both vehicles were completed with great success.
The next step was to send the cars into the vehicle wrap service and then attach a bull-bar to each before barging off to the islands.
