New ways of engaging with Warruwi youth

01 May 2020

West Arnhem Regional Council’s Youth, Sport and Recreation (YSR) team in Warruwi have been working on adapting the regular programs and activities with the Warruwi School, to include new ways of engaging with the youth through sports and education.
With the help of two new staff to the team, Darren and Leah Narul, the programs have included cultural activities such as crabbing, fishing and collecting cockles and mussels.
The team activities have worked well each day and other organisational support groups with different family groups have been helping connect activities back to country in much smaller groups than usual.
Warruwi’s Youth, Sport and Recreation team would like to thank the school for supplying the extra gear for these activities as well as the Mardbalk Ranger Program for assisting with the massive project. It wouldn't be possible without this team effort.
The YSR team has also been engaging with the school to encourage school attendance by taking part in a bike riding program.
They have also been involved with helping promote the educational side of early childhood learning with the FaFT program at the school, and staff have been engaging with the students during recess to take part in sports and educational activities while also conducting PE sessions at the school for different classes.
Outside of school hours, the YSR team has been facilitating sporting activities which allows the children to distance themselves at the undercover courts.
The activities have involved soccer skills and drills, skipping, cricket drills, hockey skills and drills and dodgeball in small groups.
Finally, the Youth, Sport and Recreation team worked with the youth to create decorations for ANZAC Day on April 25.
