One month until Kurrung Sports Carnival

02 August 2019

There is less than one month to go until the annual Kurrung Sports Carnival 10 year anniversary event which will be held in Jabiru on August 30 and 31.
Proudly hosted by West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC), the carnival attracts more than 300 sportspeople to Jabiru over two big days of intense competition including a men’s and women’s basketball and a men’s AFL competition.
The competition attracts teams from Maningrida, Gunbalanya, Warruwi, Minjilang, Kakadu, Jabiru, Darwin and beyond and there is always a fierce contest between the sides.
There is also a great show of team spirit, comradery and sportsmanship.
The carnival officially begins on Friday, 30 August with the women’s and men’s basketball competition getting under way at the Jabiru Courts, and on Saturday, 31 August, there will be the women’s basketball finals at Jabiru Area School and the men’s AFL all-day at Brockman Oval.
Team registrations are now open for the event and WARC encourages any interested players to join in a team in their community or enter a new team of players.
If you would like to find out more about the event, please have a chat to your local Youth, Sport and Recreation Officer in your community.
The word ‘Kurrung’ is a word from the local indigenous language ‘Kunwinjku’ which describes the season when the geese flocks in hundreds to Jabiru (Mahbilil).
Nominations open 8 July and close 9 August and forms are available on the WARC website, Facebook page and all WARC Council offices.
