Safer Communities for Children Workshop in Jabiru

30 June 2022

Over Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd June, West Arnhem Regional Council engaged The National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) to deliver the Safer Communities for Children workshop in Jabiru for staff, local organisations and community members.  This opportunity was made possible from funding received by WARC from the Northern Territory’s Suicide Prevention Initiatives.
This workshop provided training to deliver a new whole-of-community protective behaviours and respectful relationships program, specifically designed for young children.  It enables local community members and services to deliver an inclusive, culturally safe program that gives young people a voice and makes them feel safe. The program is based on seven bush animal stories that have safety as the core message while also reinforcing community responsibility to value and protect children.
On completion of the workshop, participants where provided access to the stories, feelings cards, and easy to follow activity plans to be able to go out and confidently deliver the program within the community.
Everyone really enjoyed the workshop and felt that it provided really important messages and practical strategies for community in helping to create safe and supported environments for our young people.
