Strong showing for Warruwi finals

10 July 2014

JUST about everyone from Warruwi was there. Kids painted their faces, wore t-shirts with the colours and names of their favourite teams, and kids at the Warruwi Creche made a huge banner for the event.

Held on Saturday 21 June, the Warruwi basketball finals started with prayer, with all the teams forming a circle and holding hands. Then there was an introduction of all the players before the games began.

The women’s final started first, with Sparks-Wunyun winning the game. The Mardbalk Cats  women’s team was runner-up.

West Arnhem Regional Council Community Services Manager Kupa Teao said the atmosphere at the men’s final was “electric”.

The Mardbalk Cats scratched out a win, with Whord Whord runner-up.

“All the spectators were getting  involved in the spirit of the game,”  Kupa said.

“We had prize giving, and a barbecue was put on for the entire community, followed by a disco and band which concluded at midnight.

"It was a great evening, lots of fun entertainment, it was good to see everyone there, young and old.”
