Upgrades to Maningrida basketball court

03 April 2020

The Maningrida community now has an improved community basketball court featuring a full roof structure covering the entire facility.
Proudly funded by the Maningrida Local Authority and West Arnhem Regional Council, this project brings many benefits to the community’s recreation, health, social and wellbeing.
With the structure now complete, the use of the courts has doubled as the community is now able to access them at all times and in all types of weather in the dry and wet season.
In addition to the hard cover roof, the project included the installation of LED lighting throughout the facility which now also allows patrons to utilise the courts at night.
The upgrade has also opened up further wheelchair access via professionally designed and constructed entry at the rear of the facility.

To celebrate the welcomed upgrades to the facility, Traditional Owner Joseph Diddo and Karen Wuridjal officially opened the courts in front of the Maningrida community.
West Arnhem Regional Council Team Leader Youth, Sport and Recreation Maddy Mackey said there are numerous community benefits as a result of the upgraded structure.
“The amazing benefit of the new infrastructure has certainly been the increase in hours we are able to utilise the courts because it is now sheltered from the sun and the rain,” Maddy said.
“We can do things at the courts straight after school and also on school holidays during the day! The school has also been using it during the school day as it’s not too hot playing there anymore.”
The facility will continue to be a great asset for the Maningrida community, which will be enjoyed by all for many years to come.
