Blokes all across Australia just love making stuff in sheds, and in communities across West Arnhem it’s no different. So when an opportunity came up at the Men’s Shed in Gunbalanya for hands-on training in metalwork, pipe bending and welding, more than 20 participants jumped at it. The resources and infrastructure work preparation training course came about through collaboration between STEPS Education and Training, Batchelor Institute, and the Gunbalanya Economic Development Aboriginal Corporation (GEDAC). As well as local men learning valuable new job skills, the Gunbalanya community got a brand-new, custom-built welcome sign.Read more

LOCAL artists at Gunbalanya in West Arnhem are welcoming tourists to their new interpretative centre at Injalak Arts. The arts centre, which currently attracts more than 8000 visitors a year, has refurbished an old screen print workshop to create a new, multifaceted space that includes audio-visual screens, interpretative boards, signage, pathways, external shade areas and areas for lectures and workshops. Located on the doorstep of Kakadu National Park, Injalak Arts is an ideal stop over for tourists looking for an authentic art and cultural experience, and it has strong appeal to international tourists and family groups.Read more

THE West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) is assisting people to stay in their own homes and on their communities by providing care, meals, advocacy and support services to people living with a disability or are frail and aged. In Gunbalanya, WARC Community Care Team Leader Cherie Nichols says the staff also take elders out onto country. “We have weekly outings for our clients to engage in cultural activities including fishing, collecting pandanus, and hunting for turtles,” Cherie says. “We usually try to take other family members along to help with everything, and it’s also a good opportunity for them to gain cross-generational education with the elders. The old ladies absolutely love it, getting out on their country and collecting pandanus to weave baskets.”Read more

The Njanjma Rangers held their Healthy Country Planning workshop in Gunbalanya and surrounds recently. Significant outcomes were achieved throughout the five days of planning, none more so than the further building of a strong partnership with the Gunbalanya School. Njanjma Rangers Program Manager Trent Wilkinson said the future was looking bright. "We are building a whole of landscape management pathway that will produce economic, employment and social benefits to Bininj of the region for another 65 years."Read more

TIMOTHY Nadjowh has been fêted as a hero in his home community of Gunbalanya in a special ceremony acknowledging his life’s work. In a historical day of celebration, Mr Nadjowh was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to the Indigenous communities of West Arnhem and to the visual arts. Mr Nadjowh was treated like Indigenous royalty in the event at the Gunbalanya school on Friday 15 May, by VIPs and schoolchildren alike.Read more

Black Arm Band return to the West Arnhem communities of Gunbalanya and Maningrida this month as part of its NT Remote Community Tour. The band delivered music workshops in Gunbalanya and Maningrida in late 2013, and although the concerts in Gunbalanya and Maningrida were delayed, Black Arm Band is delighted to now be presenting the large-scale and highly acclaimed production ‘dirtsong’ in the ‘Country’ that inspired its very creation. This journey for the work is what the original creators had always envisaged.Read more

THE Gunbalanya crew were back in Darwin on Wednesday 15 April, participating in a couch surfing race for Youth Week. The Gunbalanya boys, who won the race last year, didn’t take out the chequered flag this time around – but they did raise awareness around youth homelessness, and had a lot of fun along the way.Read more

THE Gunbalanya Night Patrol is a close-knit team of locals who have the safety of their community at heart. While their good work all too often goes unrecognised, this was not the case on Friday 20 March, when the team members were presented with certificates of appreciation for the great work they do in Gunbalanya.Read more

WEST Arnhem Regional Council will mark the centenary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli with a Centenary March in Jabiru and RAAF flypasts over four communities. In a special event organised by the Council and the Australian Defence Force, three RAAF AF/A-18A Hornets will fly low and fast over Anzac Day services in Jabiru, Gunbalanya, Minjilang and Warruwi from 8.30am Saturday, 25 April 2015.Read more
