Hot on the heels winning the Award for Film Clip of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards, East Journey will be playing the headline slot at the Mahbilil Festival in Jabiru, in the heart of Kakadu National Park. The explosive nine-piece act from Yirrkala, which formed in 2010, incorporates a unique fusion of rock, acoustic, traditional yidaki (didg) and bilma (clapsticks), as well as singing in both English and Yolngu Matha.Read more

To support this year’s Black Dog Ride, the West Arnhem Regional Council hosted a community breakfast at Lake Jabiru Park on Monday August 4 to welcome riders including Jabiru Fire Station OIC Mick Hutton. The free breakfast helped build social links for riders, community members, and community groups while raising vital funds for mental health services. On behalf of West Arnhem Regional Council, Councillor Peter Wilson presented Mick Hutton with a painting of Adjumallarl (Dog Dreaming). The artwork, by Joey Nganjmirra, is from Injalak Arts and Crafts Association in Gunbalanya. Cr Wilson praised the efforts of the Black Dog Ride in raising more than $1.5 million for mental health services while fostering awareness of depression and suicide prevention. “Mick from the Jabiru Fire Brigade has helped by raising in excess of three-and-a-half thousand dollars, which is remarkable.” Cr Wilson said.Read more

THE annual Mahbilil community festival is returning to Jabiru in 2014, to be held on Saturday 6 September. This vibrant community event has been running for many years and brings together music, arts and culture from the Mirarr people and across the Top End. The one-day celebration of cultural diversity and community is the premier cultural event on Jabiru’s calendar, bringing together a range of local Aboriginal and balanda (non- Aboriginal Australian) arts and crafts, food stalls, entertainment, parades, market stalls and installations.Read more

AS the orange tropical sun set across the lake, the only sounds to rival the country pop, jazz and blues musicians on stage were the shouts and laughter of kids enjoying a great afternoon out in the park. AN interim environmental report has found that a slurry spill at the Ranger Mine in December 2014 has resulted in no abnormal changes in the air, soil and water around the site. Parliamentary Secretary for Environment Senator Simon Birmingham said “Indigenous communities who live in Kakadu National Park can continue to fish in these rivers and creeks and drink the water without fear of contamination.”Read more

JABIRU locals are rallying around local firefighter Mick Hutton as he prepares to join a round- Australia trek in the Black Dog Ride, raising money for Lifeline and awareness of depression and suicide prevention.
