INJALAK Arts and Crafts’ 25th birthday was literally the icing on the cake for Indigenous culture and traditional arts in West Arnhem this year. A large and enthusiastic crowd turned out for the celebrations in Gunbalanya on Saturday 1 November, enjoying bush tucker cookups, traditional dancing and music, and having a go at everything from damper making and screenprinting to spear-throwing. THIS year’s Alligator Fishing Club Challenge was resounding success, with competitors from Jabiru, Darwin and Katherine against far-flung fishos from Queensland, NSW and Victoria. The family-oriented comp, held on 3-4 October in public fishing areas of Kakadu, attracted 51 boats and 134 competitors, with the youngest just four years old.Read more

THE Women’s GBR-A team from Gupanga has won the grand final of the Lurr’a Festival Basketball Competition, beating the Maningrida-A team in the final 14-10. There was a huge turnout for the games on Saturday 18 October, with teams playing until after dark. The winners were awarded medals and trophies onstage at the Lurr'a Festival that night in front of a large crowd.Read more

Residents of Maningrida are no strangers to cyclones, with Cyclone Monica tearing through the coastal community in 2006. Cyclone preparedness is something the Maningrida community takes seriously, and with that in mind, the West Arnhem Regional Council got together with other agencies to run the first Community Clean Up Competition recently.Read more
