KAKADU National Park and Parks Australia are inviting comments from locals and visitors on their draft Walking Strategy.

After three years of planning and consultations, a draft Walking Strategy has been produced for Kakadu to provide a basis for a consistent and sustainable approach to the planning, development, management and promotion of walking opportunities within the park.

Kakadu National Park Manager, Tourism and Visitor Services Tracey Diddams said the purpose of the Walking Strategy for Kakadu was to identify new bushwalking opportunities, track upgrades for visitors with physical impairments, ensure management and protection of cultural sites, look at unique business and employment opportunities for local Indigenous people (guided walks), and investigate new systems for permitting systems for overnight bushwalking and methods for providing pre-visit and on-site information.

Parks are extending the invitation to provide comments on the draft Walking Strategy until close of business on Friday 20 March 2015.

Comments can be made by email to kakadu.permits@environment.gov.au.

“All comments on the draft strategy will be carefully considered in the preparation of a final Walking Strategy for Kakadu,” Ms Diddams said.

“It is intended that this document will be endorsed by the Kakadu Board and Management and ready for implementation mid 2015. “
