Maningrida artists lead women's bush trip

14 October 2022

Last Thursday, West Arnhem Regional Council’s Youth, Sport and Recreation team joined Maningrida Arts and Culture artists and young women for a bush trip to collect pandanus leaves for basket weaving.
Artists Doreen Jinggarrabarra, Fredi Ali Wayartja, Lily Roy and Bonnie Burarngarra shared cultural knowledge on collecting Pandanus leaves and Pognolobus Reticulatus bush roots.
The root of the Pognolobus Reticulatus bush is boiled in a pot over the fire to dye the water a yellow colour. Gum tree ash is added to change the colour from yellow to red.
Pandanus is added to the water to complete a natural dye process.
Thanks to Maningrida Arts & Culture and Northern Territory Government - Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities for collaborating with us on this activity! These activities aligned with traditional Elders’ visions of cultural connections for young people in the Maningrida community through cross cultural and intergenerational learning on country.
