Maningrida showcases talent and culture

09 February 2017

Maningrida was the place to be on 26th January where the community came together to celebrate local culture, music and sports.
Coordinated by West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC), Greats Youth Service and Maningrida Music & Media, the event drew a huge crowd of about 400 people to the swimming pool and footy oval.
Despite the rain, the celebrations continued throughout the day with a slip ‘n’ slide, swimming pool games, footy comps, raffles, face painting and a sausage sizzle.
“Events like this really showcase the talent and creativity Maningrida has to offer. A lot of preparation goes into it and everyone pulls together in the community to make the event such a success,” said WARC Sport & Recreation Coordinator Seide Ramadani.
Volunteers Joseph, Elvis and Hamish were out at the oval to umpire the first footy match of the year.
“The footy match was played to honour the first four teams that started the competition in Maningrida back in the 50s – Baru, Lightning, Magpie and Seagull,” Seide said.
The event was made possible through funding from the Australia Day Council and generous sponsors Malabam Health Board, Stronger Communities for Children, MPA, BAC, Dhukurrdji Lodge, Good Food Kitchen and 168 General Store.
