West Arnhem rolls out local priority projects

MEMBER for Arafura Francis Kurrupuwu says West Arnhem, East Arnhem and Tiwi Islands Regional Councils are working on important local projects made possible through the Northern Territory Government investment.

“There has been a lot of work done and more is being done in the communities with locals, for locals,” Mr Kurrupuwu said.

“For example, in Warruwi there is a community toilets project, at Wurrumiyanga there are pool filters, a community clean-up and cemetery consultation project and at Galiwinku a major plan to redevelop Mission Beach.

“These are good grass-roots works and improve our communities.”

One-off funding of $2 million was provided to regional councils in 2014-15 to strengthen the operations of Local Authorities, with unspent funding being rolled into 2015-16.

An ongoing $5 million has been provided to regional councils, including 2014-15 and 2015-16, for local priority projects that are determined by Local Authorities.

West Arnhem Regional Council received the following grants for our communities:

GUNBALANYA - $160,047
  • Purchase and construction of public toilet block
MANINGRIDA - $575,000
  • Swimming pool repairs (to pool apron area) and new shade sail structure
  • Rubbish bin stands
  • Seating and fencing at oval
  • New toilet block
MINJILANG - $44,043
  • Playground shade structure
WARRUWI - $60,508
  • Community toilets project.

Minister for Local Government and Community Services Bess Nungarrayi Price said the level of local participation in priority projects was encouraging.
