Jabiru AFL Program building skills and keeping up momentum

Following the AFL talent carnival in Gunbalanya, where teams from Maningrida, Jabiru, Minjilang, and Warruwi competed in a fast-paced AFL 9s format, AFL NT has launched a four-week AFL program in Jabiru to build on the skills and enthusiasm shown by local youth.
The program runs on 5, 12, 19, and 26 August at Magela Oval, with an All Girls AFL Superkick session at 3:30pm and a Boys Junior Competition at 4:30pm. West Arnhem Regional Council’s Youth, Sports and Recreation team is supporting by providing icy cold water and light refreshments.
AFL NT’s Kieran Mullholland is also delivering training for those interested in learning the rules or umpiring from 5:30pm - 6:30pm.
The program was created to keep the momentum going after the excitement of the recent AFL talent carnival in Gunbalanya and to give Jabiru youth more opportunities to develop their skills, fitness, and confidence in the game.
It also aims to strengthen interest in AFL among young people, provide pathways for future talent identification, and encourage community participation through playing, learning the rules, or training as umpires.
By combining sport with mentorship and skill-building, the program helps foster teamwork, discipline, and a healthy, active lifestyle.
West Arnhem Regional Council’s Youth, Sport and Recreation team has been proud to stand alongside AFL NT in delivering the program, ensuring each session is welcoming and well-supported.
Our team has provided cold water and light refreshments to keep players and spectators hydrated, while also assisting with logistics on the day.
A special thanks goes to Kieran for running the umpiring and rules training, giving participants a deeper understanding of the game and opening pathways for those interested in officiating.
The ongoing partnership between WARC and AFL NT continues to strengthen opportunities for youth across West Arnhem, both on and off the field.
“It’s so important to keep the momentum going. Whether 10 kids or 100 kids turn up, we need to stay invested in developing our young people’s skills and talent, especially with how much AFL means to our community. These programs give our youth the chance to learn, grow, and be part of something they love, and that’s worth showing up for every single time.”
