WEST Arnhem Regional Council is tackling rubbish head-on, and the Territory Government is helping out through the Local Government Special Purpose Grants program.

WARC has been granted $132,210 towards the purchase of a Hino 500 series ‘Combo’ Rubbish compactor for the community of Maningrida.

The grant makes up 50 percent of the cost, with the the Council contributing the other 50 percent.

Local Member for Arafura Francis Kurrupuwu said the grant was well deserved, and showed the pride the Council took in its remote communities.

“There are rubbish problems in Maningrida and it is great the Council is working on this,” Mr Kurrupuwu said.

“By funding the compactor 50/50 with the Territory Government, the Council is showing they are using their funds wisely for a much deserved project.

“Their current compactor is well-worn and costly to maintain, so it’s great they are getting a new one.

“Tackling rubbish issues in any remote community is a positive step and restores community pride.”

Local Government and Community Services Minister Bess Price said the Local Government Special Purpose Grants Program, for local governing bodies and organisations providing local government services, assisted in key programs aimed at improving community infrastructure and service delivery outcomes.

“Local Government has a large role to play in maintaining and improving service delivery and we are pleased to be able to play a supportive role in this area,” Mrs Price said.

“I congratulate West Arnhem Regional Council for their great work in their region.”
