The count down is on for the region’s largest sporting event which is set to attract an estimated 300 participants to Jabiru on September 2 and 3.
A great line up of teams have entered this year’s Gurrung Sports Carnival men’s AFL and men’s and women’s basketball competitions, with nominations closing on Friday, August 19.
Among the teams participating in the carnival are the defending champions Minjilang Tigers in the men’s AFL, the Minjilang women’s basketball team as well as Jabiru Heat in the men’s basketball competition.
West Arnhem Regional Council Sports and Recreation Coordinator Seide Ramadani said the level of talent in this year’s carnival is definitely on par with previous years.
“There is certainly going to be some tough competition on the AFL field and men’s and women’s basketball courts over the weekend,” Seide said.
“It’s great to see many of the teams returning once again for this year’s competition, including the defending champions.”
Warruwi Youth, Sport and Recreation Officer Emma Waianga said the Warruwi AFL and women’s basketball teams are eager for this year’s carnival.
“(They) have been training every afternoon getting to know new drills, Emma said, “I want to get the teams ready now so we’re alert of what’s coming from the other teams we are going to play against.”
“The teams are pumped and ready to go.”
Meanwhile, the Maningrida basketball and AFL teams are well under way with their preparation.
Maningrida’s Sport and Recreation Officer Gerard Watson is busy organising the logistics to get the teams to Jabiru for the event.
“It’s going very good and they are definitely looking forward to the weekend,” Gerard said.
Seide encourages everyone to get in, give their best and have a great time.
West Arnhem Regional Council thanks the participants and sponsors of the event.
