Focus on promoting school attendance

04 March 2020

West Arnhem Regional Council’s Youth, Sport and Recreation (YSR) team in Warruwi have been working closely with the school recently to facilitate activities with a stronger focus on promoting school attendance.
Over the last few weeks, the youth in the community have been enjoying regular morning bike rides which has been an effective technique for school attendance with the students.
They have also been facilitating a rewards system to encourage higher attendance in the community.
Meanwhile, the Warruwi Recreation Hall’s chill space has become a very popular room for after-school programs for children to engage in board games, art and craft, lego, table tennis, air hockey, video games and using the iPads which are filled with education tools and games.
Other major events which occurred during the month included the home economics program, Friday night discos, gymnastics and basketball.
Some of the other highlights for the month included the team working with the school to organise waterslides (pictured right) as an activity to end the schooling week.
The YSR team also helped at  the school disco and showed support as part of the end-of-week school celebrations.
Together with the school, the YSR team are trying to diversify activities to end each school week.
