Gunbalanya’s popular Injalak Arts is calling on the community and art supporters to assist in their bid to publish a bi-lingual counting book created by senior artist Gabriel Maralngurra.
Gabriel, who is also the Co-Manager and Co-Founder of Injalak, has worked alongside a strong team to put the Kunwinjku Counting Book together as a learning tool for Kunwinjku children to learn to read and count.
The book features paintings of animals, which are ordered from one to twelve, alongside counting sentences in Kunwinjku and English. It also includes information about the ecosystems of West Arnhem Land and shows the tangible links between the Kunwinjku community and the environment.
The Kunwinjku Counting Book has been a success since the official launch at Darwin’s Nomad Art in July, where Gabriel and his daughter Gabriella delivered a reading to a huge audience.
Injalak are now hoping to go ahead and print a larger run of the books for a widespread distribution and are attempting to raise $25000 with under a month to go.
To achieve this, Injalak are seeking donations through a Pozible campaign and those who make a donation can also choose to receive a copy of the Counting Book, a painting of various sizes, an exclusive visit to Injalak and the opportunity to spend time with Gabriel himself.
As a non-profit aboriginal-owned association, the contributions will assist with printing costs of the book. Injalak are hoping community members get behind the campaign and support Gabriel’s publication. For further information or to make a donation, please visit the Pozible website at https://pozible.com/project/kunwinjku-counting-book.
