West Arnhem Regional Council in Jabiru have again won the NT Tidy Towns Resource Recovery Award. Council Service Manager Ian Lindsay picked up the 2015 award at the Keep Australia Beautiful conference in Katherine on 22 October, making it nine years in a row for Jabiru.

Keep Australia Beautiful Council (NT) Chief Executive Heimo Schober said it was an “honour and pleasure” to recognise the resource recovery work.

“Many dedicated Territory individuals and communities are undertaking (this work) to continuously improve social and environment development within their own communities and regions across the Territory,” Mr Schober said.

Mr Lindsay said one more win would “make Jabiru the benchmark” for resource recovery by racking up a decade of awards.

“The Jabiru outside works crew have been working hard to remove recycling products, both ferrous and non-ferrous material, from the waste stream,” Mr Lindsay told The Wire.

“This has helped to slow down the growth of the landfill site, saving huge expenses in the redevelopment of the site in Jabiru.”

Mr Lindsay said it was particularly important to prevent ground contamination, as the Jabiru township lay within the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park.
