Local Government Elections to be held in August 2021

29 March 2021

Over the next four months, West Arnhem Regional Council will hold various activities in West Arnhem communities to raise awareness about the 2021 Council election.
The election, which is held every four years, will have a significant impact on community members in the region.
Not only does it provide opportunities for community members to become advocates for their communities by running for councillor positions in Kakadu, Minjilang, Warruwi, Gunbalanya and Maningrida, the election also provides West Arnhem residents with an opportunity to choose councilors who will make important decisions that affect the wellbeing of communities in the region.
In this regard, the outcome of the upcoming election will have an impact on key community issues that Council focuses on over the next four years.
These include, but are not limited to local services such as childcare, aged care, waste management and the renovation of playgrounds, as well as critical issues that require input from the Northern Territory government and the Commonwealth such as youth programs, the repair and construction of roads, healthcare, safe and adequate water, and policing services in our communities.
It is therefore important for us to learn more about the election process, and participate in it either as voters, or as nominees for council positions.
Between May and August this year, pre-election barbeque workshops will be held in every community in the West Arnhem region. Attending the barbeques is a great opportunity for us to catch up and talk about what matters to us in each of our communities, and also learn about the nomination process, and how we can be actively involved in the upcoming election.
Look out for notices, posters and updates about the upcoming dates for the barbeque workshops on community noticeboards, as well as Council’s website, social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram, and electronic message boards in Jabiru and Maningrida.
Information about the barbeques will also be on leaflets that can be picked up from Council offices, and other public venues around our communities such as the post office and swimming pools.
