Remedial works on Murganella Road concluded on May 30 with the completion date coinciding with the peak tourism season.

The project, included a 100 kilometre stretch of pavement from the Three Ways through to Murganella Air Strip with works being done on formation grading, drains cleared and six kilometres of gravel resheet.

This work has provided easier access throughout the region for both local residents and visitors to the area.

The $2.2 million project began in September 2015 and was made possible through funding from the NT Government’s Strategic Local Roads Infrastructure Program.

Local stakeholders, Reuben and Dawn Cooper of Wiligi Experience out of Arnhem said they are extremely grateful for the extensive road upgrade.

“As a local business owner of Wiligi Experience out of Arnhem land and an Indigenous traditional owner living on country, we would like to express our strong support for the major upgrade.”

“This project is very important to our business, as well as on a personal level as the road condition has previously cost a great deal of time and money.”

“We are extremely grateful for the road upgrade that West Arnhem Regional Council has provided, and for future upgrades would strongly recommend and support the road crew that was contracted in 2015 to continue with any future road works.”

The Murganella Road development also saw the employment of 10 local indigenous staff on all functions of the road works, with West Arnhem Regional Council Buildings Asset Coordinator Clem Beard commenting that the works crew put in a great effort.

“All staff on the project contributed to the overall success, they gave every effort and produced a high level of work. Their dedication to ensure the milestones were met and the project remained on track was commendable,” he said.

All milestones and completion date were met by West Arnhem Regional Council, with council seeking further funding to upgrade unpaved roads throughout the area.

Clem also said the future works will present further growth in the civil works area for the Council and ongoing employment opportunities for local indigenous staff.
