Maningrida art on display at exhibition

Artists with Maningrida Arts & Culture will have their works on show in a major exhibition held at Paul Johnstone Gallery in Darwin starting on Friday, July 15.

This is the second major exhibition the Paul Johnstone Gallery has held with Maningrida Arts & Culture, after the success of the previous exhibition held in 2013.

Paul Johnstone of the Paul Johnstone Gallery said artists of Maningrida Arts & Culture continue to produce breathtaking works of art.

“The reason I enjoy working with Maningrida Arts & Culture is due to their consistent ability to create remarkable works of art. The works resonate with a rich continuous history and the skill set to convey this history is extraordinary,” he said.

He also spoke highly of the individual artists and the techniques used in the art.

“Samson Bonson and Crusoe Kurddal’s Minimh spirit sculptures shimmer with extraordinarily fine dot work. The juxtaposition of the fine painting against the heavy and solid forms presents two spectacular works. Kay Lindjuwanga’s fine rarrk on bark shifts and turns to tease the eye while Susan Marawarr’s striking black and white Wak Wak design sings.”

“Last year we also commissioned Lena Yarinkura to create 3 amazing sculptures for a client in the USA.”

Maningrida Arts & Culture Director Louise McBride said the Maningrida artists involved are excited about the promotion of their art and culture through the Paul Johnstone exhibition.

“Maningrida artists see their art as a way to show others their strong connection to country and culture,” Louise said.

“The sale of artwork directly supports artists living on their homelands, and fosters solid income opportunities for people in the bush.”

The exhibition will run from July 15 to July 30.
