Maningrida youth get their dance on

25 October 2018

Young people of Maningrida have just surfaced again from two weeks of intensive dance workshops facilitated by Darwin based artists Jinu Mathews and Caleena Sansbury.
Workshops straddled the last week of school holidays and week one of final term. Morning and evening sessions took place at the GYS Youth Centre during school holidays, engaging the local mums and bubs group, children and youth.
Yoga and zumba took the interest of younger participants while older youth showed and developed their dancing prowess to Caribbean soca, Bollywood and RnB.
Maningrida College jumped on the dance wagon, which meant school based dance sessions for preschool, primary and senior students during the day and open evening sessions for youth
at GYS.
Yet again Maningrida youth have proved they got the moves, impressing professional Artback artists Jinu and Caleena. “These Maningrida young people sure know how to dance," Caleena said.
Big thanks to GYS Youth Service, Maningrida Crèche and Maningrida College for all the support organising and delivering the workshops, and to the RSAS team who helped transport the kids to and from the holiday workshops.
Most of all - big shout out to the courageous young people of Maningrida who demonstrated not only impressive dance abilities but also self-confidence and pride in each dance session.
Rock on Maningrida.
