Warruwi celebrates new App

The Warruwi community celebrated the launch of a new app based on bird names and stories in the Mawng language.
The Mawng bird app, called Karlurri 'birds', matches Mawng bird names with their English and scientific names, completed by Ruth Singer and Janet Mardbinda, in collaboration with Mawng-speaking elders Nita Garidjalalug, Nancy Ngalmindjalmag, Frank Nabalamirri, Paul Milaidjaidj, Rosemary Urabadi, Solomon Yalbarr and Rachel Meiyinbara.
The app presents bird pictures, names and calls of some 50 bird species from the north-west Arnhem Land coast and downloaders can hear their names pronounced in the Mawng language.
The launch was held at the Warruwi School Language Centre on May 3 with those who assisted with it celebrating with their families.
There was also a barbecue put on by West Arnhem Regional Council.
The app is now available to download and was produced by the research Unit for Indigenous Language at Melbourne University and Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary project.
