West Arnhem sports teams prepare for Kurrung

31 August 2022

Training sessions are under way in West Arnhem as communities count down the weeks to the 2022 Kurrung Sports Carnival which kicks off on Friday, September 16.
This year’s event will be an inter-regional carnival with AFL and men’s and women’s basketball teams from Jabiru, Gunbalanya, Maningrida, Warruwi and Minjilang converging to Jabiru for 2 huge days of sport.
Kurrung has once again partnered with the ‘No More’ campaign, and this year, there will be the ‘Spirit of Kurrung’ cup which will be presented to the community which displays the values of the carnival - sportsmanship, respect and fair play.
This is in line with the Kurrung Code of Conduct which safeguards the carnival as a violence and grog-free event.
This responsible behaviour includes:
• Positive and safe behaviour towards other event participants, event staff and the general public
• Respect for personal and cultural difference
• Avoiding activities that may endanger yourself or others
• Respect that the event is drug and alcohol free
• Respect for the referees and the decisions that they make
• Respect other players, residents and guests by keeping noise to a minimum during the night
• This will also help you to get good rest and ready for the games ahead!
• Footwear is a condition of play
• Have a great time
With the Aboriginal communities of West Arnhem having a proud tradition of sporting excellence, the Kurrung Sports Carnival is an important event which contributes to building strong communities through fair play, team spirit and supporting a sense of belonging.
West Arnhem Regional Council wishes to thank all supporters and sponsors of this year’s carnival including Sports Australia. If any local businesses or organisations can assist to get local teams to Kurrung, please contact your local Council Services Manager.
