Opposition leader drops in to 'Grida

Northern Territory Leader of the Opposition Delia Lawrie visited Maningrida recently, meeting with Traditional Owners and service providers including West Arnhem Regional Council Community Services Manager Adam Cornell. Mr Cornell spoke with Ms Lawrie at a meeting on Wednesday 11 February about issues of concern to Maningrida residents and Council, including funding for road maintenance and upgrades, dog and animal management programs, community fencing and the need for a community morgue.Read more

Cargo cruise casts off to Arnhem Land

INTREPID travellers will be able to cruise the stunning remote areas of Arnhem Land in a unique maritime adventure to be launched on 8 December. Sea Swift’s MV Malu Trader, a working cargo barge, operates a weekly freight service between Darwin and Gove, plus remote coastal communities including Groote Eylandt and Maningrida.Read more

A 'Festival of the hoop' at Lurr'a

THE Women’s GBR-A team from Gupanga has won the grand final of the Lurr’a Festival Basketball Competition, beating the Maningrida-A team in the final 14-10. There was a huge turnout for the games on Saturday 18 October, with teams playing until after dark. The winners were awarded medals and trophies onstage at the Lurr'a Festival that night in front of a large crowd.Read more

Maningrida cleans up with prizes

Residents of Maningrida are no strangers to cyclones, with Cyclone Monica tearing through the coastal community in 2006. Cyclone preparedness is something the Maningrida community takes seriously, and with that in mind, the West Arnhem Regional Council got together with other agencies to run the first Community Clean Up Competition recently.Read more

Local Authority finds its voice in Maningrida

THE need for a community morgue was one of the first items raised at the first meeing of the newly formed Maningrida Local Authority, held at the West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) offices in Maningrida on 16 July. The Maningrida Local Authority members elected Baru Pascoe as Chairperson and Bernadette Yibarbuk as Deputy Chair. Local Authority meetings are also due to be held in Gunbalanya on 2 July and Warruwi and Minjilang on 6 August. WARC provides secretarial assistance at the meetings and lends a close ear to the concerns of the community. Through the meetings, the Local Authorities have a direct say in how council funds are spent in their communities.Read more

Our environmental achiever

A COMMITTED environmental campaigner from West Arnhem has won the 2014 ConocoPhillips Environment Award at this year’s Young Achiever Awards in Darwin. Alice Eather received her award at a Gala Presentation Dinner at Skycity on Saturday 5 April. Ms Eather, a young indigenous Traditional Owner from Maningrida, is a teacher, campaign leader, and environmental advocate. Ms Eather is a leader in a campaign opposing fracking off the Arnhem Land coast.Read more

Agencies team up for Australia Day

AUSTRALIA Day long weekend celebrations got underway in Maningrida with a Junior Football game and free barbecue held on Saturday, January 25. AFL NT Regional Development Officer Maningrida Bernie Price congratulated all involved on a great morning for the kids. The success of the event reiterated the the importance of inter-agency cooperation, he said.Read more
