A SERIES of recent photographs has created an amazing visual archive documenting the arrival of Europeans in Arnhem Land as depicted in rock art from the era. The photographs are the work of Northern Territory photojournalist David Hancock, who visited sites with elders of the Warddeken Indigenous Protected Area in West Arnhem Land. The project, titled ‘Fragile First Impressions,’ conserves the fragile rock art of the plateau in conjunction with the traditional owners. A GUNBALANYA School teacher whose work is helping Indigenous students build their expertise in money management has been recognised for her outstanding contribution with a Commonwealth Bank Foundation Teaching Award. THE annual Mahbilil community festival is returning to Jabiru in 2014, to be held on Saturday 6 September. This vibrant community event has been running for many years and brings together music, arts and culture from the Mirarr people and across the Top End. AS the orange tropical sun set across the lake, the only sounds to rival the country pop, jazz and blues musicians on stage were the shouts and laughter of kids enjoying a great afternoon out in the park. Minjilang came to life from 23-27 July, as Minjilang Healthy Lifestyle Week brought the local community together to learn about the benefits of quitting smoking and a how to live a healthy lifestyle. As one young man said, “the community has not been this busy, active and fun for long time”. AN interim environmental report has found that a slurry spill at the Ranger Mine in December 2014 has resulted in no abnormal changes in the air, soil and water around the site. Parliamentary Secretary for Environment Senator Simon Birmingham said “Indigenous communities who live in Kakadu National Park can continue to fish in these rivers and creeks and drink the water without fear of contamination.”Read more

THE need for a community morgue was one of the first items raised at the first meeing of the newly formed Maningrida Local Authority, held at the West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) offices in Maningrida on 16 July. The Maningrida Local Authority members elected Baru Pascoe as Chairperson and Bernadette Yibarbuk as Deputy Chair. Local Authority meetings are also due to be held in Gunbalanya on 2 July and Warruwi and Minjilang on 6 August. WARC provides secretarial assistance at the meetings and lends a close ear to the concerns of the community. Through the meetings, the Local Authorities have a direct say in how council funds are spent in their communities.Read more
