Positive health promotions in community

06 December 2019

Remote Alcohol and other Drug worker Leon James invited Jo-Ann Adams (Senior Aboriginal Health Promotion Officer) and Jane Whitehead (AOD clinical nurse mentor) to Gunbalanya to visit work places, including the health centre to promote AOD education.
They provided educational pamphlets and tools for clients to take away and/or leave in the workplace.
Leon tested people’s steadiness when using the beer goggles. The Smokerlyser was used to show levels of carbon monoxide in a smoker’s system.
A lot of interest was shown in the poster looking at ‘common-use’ chemicals found in cigarettes.
Leon had visited one work place prior to our arrival and will continue to promote AOD in work places for the month of October.
Jo-Ann designed the evaluation forms, which Leon had translated in language, and encouraged people to fill them in.
A raffle ticket was offered to those who actively participated with the health promotion activities.
The health centre manager, Greg Smith, drew the lucky prize winner who was delighted with her hamper of household essentials.
