A TEAM from the Jabiru Fire S tation has again won the NT Firefighters Games Sunday 11 May at Fred’s Pass reserve in Darwin. Jabiru has been the dominant team in the last four competitions, managing to beat some close competition. The team this year consisted of experienced members Justin Gould, Macca Morris and Tamykah Anderson alongside three new members in Tony Koch, Adam Thompson and Mike Martin.Read more

A SECTION of a new footpath being built at Gunbalanya will need to be pulled up and relaid after it was vandalised overnight on Thursday 15 May 2014. The concrete pour was destroyed by what appear to be at least two separate sets of adult-sized footprints. Dog paw prints and graffiti scrawls also mar the work. Gunbalanya Police are investigating the incident, which caused thousands of dollars damage.Read more

THE community of Gunbalanya was out in force on Saturday 17 May to watch Banyan go head-to-head with arch-rivals Injalak at the footy grand final. Organised by West Arnhem Regional Council’s Youth, Sport and Recreation team, the event drew a big crowd for four quarters of fierce footy. Showing good class in the ruck, and with Hilton Garnarradj moving into space around the ground, Injalak applied pressure early, leaving Banyan to play catch-up for the first two quarters.Read more

CareFlight will be the recipients of all funds raised in the upcoming Kakadu Triathlon in Jabiru. Jabiru is a frequent destination for CareFlight aircraft and helicopters transferring ill and injured patients to specialist treatment in Darwin.Read more

DROP in to the Mardbalk Arts Centre on any given day and you’ll discover a hive of activity. Kids and dogs are coming and going, and there is a constant stream of new artworks and sales. On Monday, 7 April, a cruise ship weighed anchor off the island, ferrying in a group of tourists and art buyers from South Africa, the Americas, New Zealand, and of course the rest of Australia.Read more

A COMMITTED environmental campaigner from West Arnhem has won the 2014 ConocoPhillips Environment Award at this year’s Young Achiever Awards in Darwin. Alice Eather received her award at a Gala Presentation Dinner at Skycity on Saturday 5 April. Ms Eather, a young indigenous Traditional Owner from Maningrida, is a teacher, campaign leader, and environmental advocate. Ms Eather is a leader in a campaign opposing fracking off the Arnhem Land coast.Read more

KAKADU has some of the most beautiful wetlands in the world. But for the Bininj kids on board the Kakadu Cultural Tours boat the Guluyambi , it goes so much deeper than that. For these children, the Jabiru Area School excursion the Magela Wetlands on Thursday 13 March is also about connecting with country. Their guide for the day is Neville Namarnyilk, who also happens to be Bininj. Neville has a wealth of knowledge of the wildlife of the area, along with dreaming stories, traditional survival skills, bush tucker, and medicine. And he’s not shy about sharing it. “It’s really important for these kids to come and see what’s here, to experience what’s in the billabong,” Neville says.Read more
