A COLLABORATIVE group of artists from Manaburduma in Kakadu have been chosen as finalists in the 2015 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award for their artwork featuring munmalih sticks. A cultural tool, the munmalih is traditionally used by women to collect pandanus and palm leaves for weaving, and was also used at times to pull goannas and pythons down from high branches. Supported by Children's Ground, the Munmalih Sisters project brings senior women (Daluks) young women (Yauk Yauks) and young girls (wurdurd) together in a space that values intergenerational conversation.Read more

THE Jabiru community has done it again, putting on the third annual Kakadu Triathlon – an event that just keeps getting better and better! Speaking at the event on Saturday 16 May, Kakadu Triathlon Race Director Brett Verity from the Darwin Triathlon club had nothing but praise for the community event. “This is my favourite event, and I'm into pretty much anything – if there's a race to the letterbox I'll be in it,” Verity said.Read more

The first round of the 2015 Jabiru Mixed Netball competition had some keenly contested games. No game was closer than the first cab off the rank between JAS and last year’s champions, Kia Kaha. The teachers’ team gave Kia Kaha a lesson out on the court, getting over the line at the final whistle by just one point.Read more

MEMBERS of the Telstra team who visited Jabiru on Thursday 7 May say they were knocked out by the turnout and the friendliness of the residents. “The people of Jabiru were keen to talk to us about their town and the work they did out here,” one team member said. West Arnhem Regional Council Head of Corporate Services Valentin Markez spoke with the visiting Telstra techs about the possibility of hooking up West Arnhem communities to fibre optic broadband.Read more
